Dealing With Constant Coughing in Children

As parents, the last thing we want to do is watch our children suffer. It is difficult to sit by and watch them as they experience pain and hurt - it is a very helpless feeling. This is even doubly so when there is nothing that we can do to "fix" their problem. Our experience with this is typically when they get sick. We've been exactly where they are, throbbing headaches, fevers, muscle aches, and that annoying, constant cough!
Just like with adults, the triggers to constant coughing in children can vary. It may be anything from a common cold, to something more serious like asthma or bronchitis. If your child is prone to common childhood colds or allergy related coughing fits - rushing them to the doctor at every whimper is probably not the answers to your problems. Besides that, who wants to keep their child doped up on medications all the time? Lets explore some natural remedies that cure coughing and are safe for kids.
Room humidifiers or de-humidifiers: One thing that we tend to overlook as a trigger to coughing fits, are air-borne irritants. Children's throats and lungs are especially sensitive to this. If the air in a room is either too dry or has too much moisture, it will likely effect them before it does us. If you notice your child's coughing worsens when her or she is in a certain room, try this.
Clean up: Once again - things like dust, mold and pet dander are likely to impact your children before you. Even if your house isn't necessarily dirty - even the finest specks of dust can trigger this. Check areas of your home that are commonly missed during cleaning time. This includes ceiling fans and the filters that cover the vents to the air system of your home. You may also want to consider changing the bed sheets more often as well.
Warm liquids: Warm liquids such as teas and soups will help in soothing an irritated throat. Use your judgement when giving your child teas, I usually opt for an organic tea with a teaspoon or two of honey. This works wonders. When it comes to soup, I like to go for those that have more broth and less "filling" (i.e. noodles, veggies, and things like that).
Cough drops: Age old remedies like Halls brand cough drops are great, especially the medicated type. For quicker relief, allow the cough drop to dissolve in a glass of hot water, lemon and a squirt of honey. Once the liquid reaches a drinkable temperature - have your child drink it all before it chills. This is a great remedy that works fast and is a perfect drink right before bedtime.
Most coughs are easily diagnosed and treated, but if you have a cough that is violent, painful, last longer than 10-12 days even with treatment, or produces a foul smelling, odd looking mucus - seek medical attention immediately.
