How to Get the Most Benefit From Hand Sanitizers

Hand sanitizers have become increasingly popular this year due to the H1N1 scare. While they are beneficial, unless you use them correctly, they may not provide as much protection as you think. Just how effective this product really is at reducing illness depends upon its ingredients and how it is applied. Here are three pointers on which hand sanitizers to use and how to use them--
The ethyl alcohol found in hand sanitizers is a proven germ killer, but not just any alcohol gel will do what we need it to do. East Tennessee State University conducted some experiments and determined that a product containing 40 percent alcohol left over 50 percent of the germs on the testers' hands. In order to get rid of most of the germs, they determined that it took a product with at least 60 percent alcohol, according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
If you are wearing rings on your fingers, you need to take them off when applying the sanitizer. Rings are top hiding spots for germs and infection, so if you take them off before applying hand sanitizer, you're just going to be redepositing germs on your freshly cleaned hands. Hand sanitizers should not damage precious metals like gold, but if you are wearing costume jewelry, you should only use soap and water for sanitizing your hands.
Hand sanitizers with the proper amount of alcohol concentration are very effective, but you must be sure that you cover your entire hand to get all the germs. Missing even a tiny spot can behind thousands of germs. So, you need to start off with a quarter size glob of sanitizer and work it into the nooks between your fingers, into your palms and the back of your hand and then finish up by making sure you hit all of your fingertips.
By following these 3 simple rules, you can increase the effectiveness of your hand sanitizer and get rid of those nasty germs that cause illness.
